Fed: Howard hopes states will commit to new River Murray plan

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says the commonwealth is cautiously hopeful states willagree to a new $500 million fund to fight the River Murray's decline.

Mr HOWARD has written to state and territory leaders, telling them the commonwealthwill put $125 million towards the new fund.

The prime minister says he hopes all governments will recognise the need for an historiccoming together to help the ailing Murray and provide the funding difference.

Mr HOWARD says if agreed at a Council of Australian Governments meeting in Canberranext week, monies will flow for five years from next year.
