FED:Building union calls on backpackers to dob in boss cheats
Australia's peak building union is appealing to backpackers to ensure they don't getripped off on the job.
The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union says unscrupulous employers arepreying on backpackers for cheap labour.
Union state secretary ANDREW FERGUSON says bosses in the building industry are takingadvantage of the average backpacker's ignorance of Australian industrial laws.
He says the union regularly finds young Irish and British men working on holiday visason Sydney building sites -- uninsured and underpaid.
Mr FERGUSON says he's lost count of the number of backpackers he's found working onconstruction sites for 30 to 40 per cent less than unionised rates of pay and withoutinsurance.
He says an Irish backpacker was killed on a building site in the Sydney suburb of Mascotjust two years ago.
