Mr Ingram said he was relieved to no longer have the balance of power, and be ableto focus on representing his south-eastern electorate.

"That wasn't something I expected or even really wanted," he said.

"We were jammed up a lot and you had to be forever on your guard and know everythingthat was going on across the state.

"I don't think I should have been the watchdog over every government action and inreality that's what we were, which was very difficult."

Mr Ingram said he believed the massive primary vote swing in his favour - from 25 percent in 1999 to 42 per cent - was due to strong campaigning on local issues, includingnatural gas connection and funding for roads and rail.

He paid tribute to Ms Davies, saying she had been hurt by the massive swing to Laboracross the state, which pushed her into third place on primary votes.

"I don't always agree with everything she's done or says but I still value her as afriend and as a leader for what she stood for," she said.
